Our vision is to produce fruits and vegetables from St. Vincent de Paul Society gardens for our programs.  We have a number of programs, including the Multi Service Center Homeless Shelter, Wellness Center, Withe Center, and Riley Center that provide meals each day to our low income and disadvantaged clientele.  Fresh fruits and vegetables would kick up the nutritional values of the meals and help ease food expenses.
A former board member and donor of the St. Vincent de Paul Society of San Francisco has donated his backyard to be used for our garden project.  We have crafted a team consisting of San Francisco Permaculture Guild’s designer David Cody, St. Vincent de Paul Society staff members, volunteers versed in horticulture and urban gardening, and the family providing the backyard.
Eventually we foresee our clients learning how to construct, plan, maintain, and harvest a garden.  It is proven that gardening serves as a great form of therapy.  Once we get a few harvests under our belt, we will encourage others in our community to lend their backyards.  We welcome community members in joining us as we offer hope and service to the poor and suffering on a direct person to person basis as we break the cycles of homelessness, addiction, and domestic violence.
